Beware Flying Fan Blades! Ceiling Fans Recalled Due to Impact Injury Hazard

Hong Kong China Electric Appliance Manufacture Company is recalling about 77,900 ceiling fans due to an injury risk. According to a Consumer Product Safety Commission recall alert, the blades may detach from the fan while in use. If you purchased one of these fans between February 2018 and August 2021, it might fall under this recall.

According to the Dec. 15 announcement, the CPSC has received 60 reports of the blades detaching from the fan, including three incidents where the blades damaged drywall. No injuries have been reported.

The recall involves the Harbor Breeze Belleisle Bay and Honeywell Rio ceiling fans. These models were made in China and sold for $150 online at Lowes.com, Amazon.com, Wayfair.com and other online retailers (listed here).

To see whether your ceiling fan falls under this recall, check the UPC (universal product code) and model number against this list. This information is printed on a silver rating label on the top of the fan housing assembly.

If you own a recalled fan, the CPSC recommends you stop using it immediately and contact Hong Kong China Electric Appliance Manufacture Company for a replacement. When you reach out to the Memphis, Tenn.-based distributor, you’ll be asked to send a photo of the fan and the date code to confirm it’s part of this recall. Then, you’ll need to disconnect the fan and provide evidence that it has been disconnected. The company will then send consumers a replacement fan by mail.
