What Are Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credits?

According to Energy Star, the Non-Business Energy Property Tax Credits for residential energy efficiency have been extended retroactively through Dec. 31, 2021. These tax credits apply for upgrades made to an existing home in the U.S. that is your primary residence. The tax credit is good for 10% of the cost of the system or appliance up to $500 or a specific amount between $50 and $300.

To receive the tax credit, you will have to file an IRS Form 5695. The tax credit is only available to private individuals. It cannot be claimed by businesses. It is not applicable to rentals or new builds, and it cannot be claimed for second or vacation homes.

There are also tax credits available if you install a renewable energy system. Both new builds and existing homes qualify. Primary residences and second homes qualify, but rental properties do not. This tax credit expires Dec. 31, 2023. Until the expiration, the credit value will gradually decrease. So, the tax credit amount depends on when you installed the system. Here are the values:

  • 30% for renewable systems put into service before Dec. 31, 2019
  • 26% for systems put into service after Dec. 31, 2019, and before Jan. 1, 2023
  • 22% for systems put service after Dec 31, 2022, and before Jan. 1, 2024

Which HVAC Systems and Appliances Qualify for a Tax Credit?

The energy tax credit is offered for systems put into service no later than Dec. 31, 2021. It's not only available for HVAC systems; some Energy Star appliances may also qualify. The appliances must have a certain efficiency rating to qualify. Energy Star lists those ratings — and other qualifiers — here.

With the proper energy efficiency rating, these systems and appliances are eligible for the tax credit:

  • Air source heat pumps
  • Central air conditioning systems
  • Gas, propane or oil hot water boilers
  • Non-solar water heaters
  • Advanced main air circulating fans
  • Biomass stoves
  • Insulation (installation costs not included)
  • Metal and asphalt roofs (installation costs not included)
  • Windows, doors and skylights (installation costs not included)

Which Renewable Energy Systems Qualify for a Tax Credit?

The maximum credit amount varies depending on the system you choose. Check the Energy Star website for more specific information about which systems qualify. In general, these four types of renewable energy qualify for the credit:

  • Geothermal heat pumps
  • Small wind turbines
  • Solar water heaters and solar panels
  • Fuel cells

How Do I Claim My Tax Credit?

In order to claim your energy efficiency tax credit, you will need to complete IRS Form 5695 and include it in your filing. Be sure to retain your receipts and any paperwork that verifies the energy efficiency of your purchase. Use these instructions by the IRS to file the form.

Remember that this is a tax credit and can only be applied to reduce your tax liability. If you owe less than the tax credit, you do not get a refund, nor can you use the balance later. You will want to check with your tax specialist to verify the system you choose will qualify. More information is available at IRS.gov. Consult a tax specialist for assistance when filing.

Are Manufacturer Rebates Available on Energy Efficient Systems?

To maximize your savings, look for rebate offers on new, efficient HVAC systems and appliances in your area. Manufacturers may offer rebates.
