How Do You Tell If You Need to Program Your Opener?

Generally speaking, if your remote is no longer responding, it’s a good indication that it needs to be reprogrammed. Step 1: Check the Brand

Start by making sure your new remote is the same brand as the opener that you’re using. If the brands aren’t the same, the remote won’t work. That’s because the remotes and openers operate on specific frequencies that use different information.

Step 2: Locate the LEARN Button

Then, find and locate the LEARN button on the opener. Sometimes, the LEARN button can be rather hard to find. If you have a wall control in your garage, try looking there, as the buttons are usually on both the remote and the wall unit. If you still can’t locate it, try removing the light cover on the wall unit, as it could be located inside the cover as well.

Step 3: Press OPEN on the Remote

Once you find the LEARN button, press it until it starts to flash. Note: If you have a LiftMaster equipped with a “myQ” smart home control panel, you’ll need to press the button twice.

Then, press the OPEN button on your garage door remote. Typically, you’ve got a roughly 30-second time limit after pressing the LEARN button and pressing the OPEN button on the remote.

Step 4: Finish and Test

After you’ve pressed the OPEN button, let the remote finish the process for about a minute. Then, press the open button on your remote again. If it works, that means you’ve successfully paired and programmed your garage door remote. Open and close the door a few times to make sure the programming was completely successful.
